Fixing your Xbox360 RROD
By Digital Sniper
RROD is a problem that Plagues Xbox360 owners. Microsoft has extended the warranty on them, but after sending mine back 3 different times, I decided to do some research online and fix it myself...for good! The first thing you will need to do is open the case. A great tutorial is found at http://www.xboxchopshop.com/catalog/man_360_open.php with step by step instructions and lots of pictures. Actually the first thing you will need to do is go parts shopping at Lowes or Home depot. Ive been to both and found Lowes had exactly what I needed. Below is a list of parts (total of about $8.00) a) 8 M5-.80 x 10 Machine Screws b) 16 #10 Flat Washers - Nylon c) 16 .5mm Flat Washers - Metal d) Some type of Thermal compound (Radio shack carries it) The problem with the RROD is the Xclamps holding the CPU heat sink and the GPU heat sink in place. These need to be removed and tossed away. (of course this all happens after you disassemble your box. When you remove the Xclamps (put a small screw driver against the post and clamp and it will pop off), remove the heat sinks from the top of the board. Take a pair of pliers and remove the posts that went through the board and toss them too. Next get some alcohol and cotton balls and clean the thermal paste (its actually like a piece of aluminum tape) off the heat sinks and off the chips. They should be a mirror finish when you are done. This is very important they are CLEAN!!! To replace the heat sinks, put a metal washer and then a nylon washer on a screw and slide it through the hole (i taped down the screw so it wouldn't fall back out. Do this with all 4 for your CPU first. Make sure the nylon washers are against your mother board!!! Flip your board over, place a nylon washer over the screw, followed by a metal one. Do this on all 4 screws. Set the heat sink over the screws and tighten each screw down till its snug (not tight). Rinse and repeat with the GPU heat sink. After this is done, place the motherboard back in the case (do not screw it back in, just lay it in there), replace the power button board with lights so you can see whats going on. Plug in the DVD player and set it across the top corner of the case. Leave the FANS off for this next part. Plug in your Video to the box and TV and your power brick and turn it on. Ive done 4 xboxs this way and every time I get a picture for a couple of minutes before the RROD comes back. Without the fans its only a matter of time before it happens. When it does, wait TWO minutes and then shut it off. This lets the broke solder points re-solder themselves in place. Once you turn it off, pull the mother board back out and Tighten down all your screws while its cooling off (you want to do it while its still hot). Dont over tighten the screws, but really snug them down good. Let it cool down all the say and put it all back together. If you can, get any type of cooling mod to help it out, it still will run hot, it just wont flex the motherboard without the X clamps. So anything will help extend the life of your box. All thats left to do now is cross your fingers and start playing again. As I said, i have done this to 4 xbox's and they ALL worked great and still are. Just remember this VOIDS your warranty, but the 8 bucks in parts is cheaper than the shipping, plus you dont lose your saved info. Good luck. Its also a great way to make extra money by buying dead boxes off Ebay or Craigslist and fixing them and reselling them. DigitalSniper Next time you shop for a game on Ebay, stop by my site below and search for what your looking for first. Thanks!

Contributor's Note
I did not come up with this idea. I was given a printed out .pdf with no author on it. Just a link to the site to remove your case. Its a Great fix, and Im thankful that someone came up with it. I just did not see anywhere on qassia how to fix an Xbox and Ive never seen this on the web (but im sure its out there).
